Live streaming delivery across Asia

Short answerFor live streaming in Asia, choose the playback protocol by how much delay you can accept, then choose vendors by where your viewers are. HLS is the most compatible and has the most delay; HTTP-FLV and low-latency HLS are in between; WebRTC is for interactive streams that need near real-time. Viewers in mainland China need a domain with an ICP filing to be served from in-country nodes.

What to know

Latency is a product decision

One-way broadcasts tolerate a few seconds. Auctions, live commerce with real-time bidding, betting-style interaction and co-streaming need low or ultra-low latency, which costs more.

Ingest and playback are separate

Push with RTMP or SRT from the encoder; play with HLS, FLV or WebRTC. The ingest point should be near the streamer, playback nodes near the viewers.

Mainland China viewers

In-country delivery requires an ICP-filed domain. Without it, viewers are served from nearby regions with weaker stability.

What drives the bill

Peak concurrent viewers and bitrate set the bandwidth. Transcoding, recording and moderation are billed on top.

FAQ

Which protocol should I use?

Start from the delay your product can accept. If viewers only watch, HLS or FLV is enough. If they interact in real time, look at WebRTC.

Can I stream to both China and overseas viewers?

Yes. It is usually done with separate delivery for mainland and overseas, under one ingest.

How is live streaming priced?

Mainly by bandwidth or traffic, driven by concurrent viewers and bitrate, plus features such as transcoding and recording.
